Some of the students were late in responding to my survey. One response in particular caught my attention. In response to a question about what may help me teach them better, one of the best students in the class said the following: "please don't be mad! I really like American saying: KiSS! Keep it simple and stupid!!!" I keep another unedited journal for every class session that I observe. In this journal, I would write my immediate thoughts to what is going on in the classroom. Here is what I said about this comment and other similar comment "seriously, is this sign of disrespect? or is it merely a joke?" I did not know what was interesting about saying "kiss" but after long thoughts and other mediations, I realized that kiss stood for Keep it simple and stupid. But why would a bright student find this enjoyable? And why would he/she report this to me? And how would this help me in teaching that student? I did not want to tell my mentor of this because I did not want her to change her opinion of that student. However, I did discuss this with my colleagues and friends who found this completely funny while others found it inappropriate. What do I think? I think that the student found me friendly enough to share this thought with me. He may have not seen me as a higher authority because some of his/her friends are my friends as well. Nonetheless, I plan to ask the student about his comment very soon--it would be interesting to see what he thinks!!!
